EAT MORE GREENS!
With sincere (?) apologies to my chocoholic readers (you know who you are .... Dom and Chele) I'm back with more veggies. Years ago (when the boys were small and I was obsessed with nutrition) I read a wonderful book by Andrew Weil called "8 Weeks To Optimum Health" - a few of his recommendations have stuck with me through the years: Have a "news fast" every so often (no radio or TV news and skip the newspapers) - very calming. Buy yourself flowers regularly - they lift your spirits. Eat broccoli - it is brim full of goodness - so here goes!
I have been dipping in and out of Ellie Krieger's "The Food You Crave" recently, and when I saw a recipe for "Dirty Broccoli" - I just had to try it!!! Not sure where the dirty bit came from but the recipe is excellent - tasty, interesting and healthy. Ellie describes the dish as delectable, and she's right!
"Dirty" Broccoli
1 bunch broccoli
2 tbsp olive oil (I used slightly less)
2 garlic cloves, minced (I used 3)
3 tbsp wholemeal breadcrumbs
1/4 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
Divide the broccoli into spears and steam until cooked to your taste.
While the broccoli is steaming heat the oil on a large pan or wok, adding the garlic while the oil is still cold, cook it for about a minute.
Add the breadcrumbs, oregano and seasonings and stir until the mixture is toasted and golden.
Combine the broccoli and the crunchy breadcrumbs and serve.
Enjoy.

is there an 'un-follow' button?... how am I supposed to get my sweet fix?... regardless of how lovely and tasty your 'dirty' broccoli looks... and it does... please can you resume normal service as quickly as possible?
I'm still laughing at Dom's comment. Anyway broccoli is good for you and with garlic even better. I like a lot of Ellie's recipes.
This sounds delicious - even if it is a broccoli dish! Ellie really proves that you can create dishes which are both a joy to eat and healthy for you... Thanks for sharing! And for mentioning "8 Weeks to Optimum Health" - I'll have to check that one out soon! Have a lovely weekend!
LOL on Dom's comment! I think you'll have to put a side of fudge or chocolate cookies out with your veggies for him! LOL!
I love broccoli, the hubby not so much, he'll eat it because it's good for him! This sounds great, I have two of her cookbooks! I think the "dirty" may come from the breadcrumbs? Now, if I could only get him to eat salmon!
Have a wonderful day!
I love recipes with broccoli, those breadcrumbs on top must add really a special taste, this is definitely a keeper recipe for me.
great advice and good tip on the butter for scones thanks
Usually i jump onto the walls, screaming when i see broccoli, but your recipe sounds intriguingly interesting..
Sur' we cannot live on chocolate alone ... although I have tried!!!
Am in need of an iron boost anyway so I do appreciate the broccolli recipe :-)

I like some of Dr Weil's advice and I am all for a News Fast now and again! This dirty broccoli is a favorite Ellie recipe of mine and I am glad you gave it a go. It reminds me I need to make it again! Yours looks fabulous.

I think this looks wonderful. I could eat broccoli every day.
No apologies, please! What you said was perfect. I am always looking for more encouragement to eat healthier. Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving such a sweet comment.
Oh BVG I hate broccoli. Couldn't you have poured chocolate sauce over it or something ;)
Wonderful cabbage and broccoli recipes! Thanks for your invaluable reminder! I'll gladly heed your advice and eat my greens! It has been a long while sine I heard it said. To your health! Cheers!!!
I promise you that chocolate is a food group ... and as it is a bean that makes it a vegetable and so therefore a healthy food group ... are you buying any of this?? lol
Looks tasty to me - I love broccoli but ways to jazz it up a bit are always welcome!
I'm a fan of broccoli and this looks likes another great way to serve it!

Yum! I like the 'dirty' concept. I actually eat lots of green (to balance the sweets I guess)...especially kale.

Ooh, garlicky broccoli - I likey. Think you should change your blog background to green until chocolate-service resumes!
It sounds delicious! I love broccoli and have the Weil book also. My aunt would always advice us to eat more broccoli. She lived until her late 80's with seldom going to the doctor so there must be something to it.
I included one of your recipes in my Ash Wednesday blogroll today. Thanks for helping me with my meatless days:)
Yum! I love broccoli, and had it for dinner last night. I usually cook the florets, but save all the stalks to eat raw. This sounds like a delicious and simple new way for me to prepare it. Now bring on the cake!!!

Hmmm, I'm with Chele and Dom! But this does sound rather a nice way of having broccoli, so I'll try not to complain too much.

In my opinon, there's nothing better for the body than healthy greens or dishes like this! Thanks for sharing your idea.
That's good advice. I do a news fast every now and then too - usually on hols - no tv, no radio, no newspapers - blissful ignorance. I bought myself flowers today - an enormous bunch of daffs. Thanks for the 'Dirty' Broccoli recipe. Love garlic with this veg but the breadcrumbs are a new departure.
Wow! You can even make broccoli look delicious! I love my greens! This recipe sounds simple and delicious. I am sure my youngster will love it!
Haven't heard much from you lately, hope everything's OK!
