EAT YOUR GREENS
I think it's time to redress the balance - what about some nice healthy vegetables after all the recent breads and cakes?? And what nicer vegetable to turn to than vibrant, mineral rich cabbage. One of my very favourite (I never seem to make enough!!) and this is an easy, tasty way to prepare it. Although perhaps not an obvious pairing I think that orange goes really well with irony (is that a word?) deep green cabbage - the slightly tart, slightly sweet orange seems to bring out the intense greenness of the vegetable.
This is a handy dish for dinner parties as you can prepare the (orange and garlic) oil and cabbage before time and then just stir fry them together at the last minute.
Garlic and Orange Cabbage
1 head Dark Green Cabbage
1 Orange (Zest and Juice)
1 Large Clove Garlic
2 tsp Olive Oil
1 tsp Butter
Heat the oil and butter in a wok or large pan to medium high.
While it is coming up to temperature grate in the garlic and orange zest.
Allow to sizzle but do not allow the garlic to burn.
Add the cabbage and toss in the flavoured oil.
After a minute or so, add half the orange juice.
Cook until it is to your taste - about 4 minutes is enough for me. You might need to add more of the juice.
Season with salt and pepper and serve.

I don't eat enough cabbage myself - when you mentioned nice and healthy, I thought 'kale' (which I eat at least once a week). I really ought to try more cabbage, and your dish sure looks delicious!
This sounds really delicious. I always cook my cabbage with lemon, I will try orange next time.
Really important to eat our greens - my favourites are kale and spinach!
I loved your carrots and I just know I am going to love this. Thank goodness for your Blog otherwise I'd need you sitting on my bookshelf.
I bet this is so delicious. We don't have cabbage that much and I really don't know why. We like it but usually only cook it with corned beef or make cole slaw out of it. This I think we would really enjoy.
I love garlic with green veg but haven't yet tried adding orange zest and juice. Sounds lovely and fresh. (now following too)
Do you think I could have my greens chocolate coated?
lovely! i really like cabbage, i'll have to try this soon!
pah!... i don't think so young lady... bring back the brownies! Bring back the brownies!... etc...
Yum! Those look so bright and tasty!
Now that reminds me of a colin spencer recipe for brussels sprouts with cointreau which is amazing - not sure if a little booze ruins the virtuous nature of your glorious greens but a little slosh might be interesting in addition to your orange juice!!!
Oooh that sounds lovely. I'm going to make that when I get a cabbage. I love cabbage too, got to take advantage of healthy likes!!
Love cabbage, especially red! I will try this though, thanks for sharing! Have a wonderful weekend!

I have never thought to pair orange with cabbage but I can see that it would be wonderful together. Will have to try this sometime soon. Have a great weekend.

We are always casting around for new ways to eat cabbage ... love this idea of the citus! So fresh and spring-y! Great color too! So important at this time of year!
Mmmm green! Lovely!
This looks like a great recipe for livening up cabbage! I love the health benefits of the stuff.. but it can be hard to eat simply boiled or wilted!x
